Media Grads: Saatchi and Saatchi Speaks…

April 23, 2009

Saatchi

In these tough times, agencies are only going to take on the very best grads to add to their business. But how are you going to stand out from the crowd? What is going to help you take that first interview? As part of my ongoing pledge to help advise media grads on how to break the media industry, I am out to talk to the industry big wigs and find out what they look for in media grads. And I have a great start for you!

Ben Roberts is the Talent Director for EMEA for  Saatchi and Saatchi, and a fan of Mobile Advertising Matters. If anyone knows what an agency looks for in a grad, its him! So, his advice?

1) “There is so much choice out there you really need to research the industry thoroughly. Make sure the companies you apply to do what you are interested in whether it’s media, advertising or direct marketing. Look at different companies and try to discover what the culture is like. Start targeting those you feel best suited to. You want to work somewhere where you feel like you belong if you can.”

2) “Have something that these companies will get interested in you about. The more you have done off your own back, whether it’s from university sideline projects to small business ventures is ideal, if you are a doer you stand a strong chance. You need to make this heard, having an online profile is ideal (blogs, facebook, linkedin, twitter are all popular in the industry) but also you want to make sure there’s not too much incriminating stuff on there as well.”

3) “Be persistent. Keep trying and keep knocking down doors. If you have talent and you are hungry you will get there.”

Many thanks to Ben for taking the time to contribute!

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!

Excellent! – I think number 3 is one of the most important pieces of advice as persistence and hard work always pays off! Thanks for posting this …
